Rotten Tomatoes: 59%

Adapted from a best-selling, post-World War I set novel of the same name by M.L. Stedman, The Light Between Oceans tells the tale of a married couple (Michael Fassbender and Alicia Viskander) who live in a lighthouse off the coast of Western Australia and, after a rowboat containing a dead man and a new-born girl washes ashore their island, decide to raise the child as their own. Because nothing could go wrong with that ingenious plan.

While it might’ve worked as a book, the story didn’t transfer to the big screen so well even in the hands of talented director Derek Cianfrance whose first three feature films (Brother Tied, Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines) were all very well received by critics. The Light Between Oceans? Not so much. Despite solid performances from its leads and supporting cast (Rachel Weisz, Bryan Brown and Jack Thompson), it’s ultimately too schmaltzy for its own good.
