12. A Fantastic Woman

A Fantastic Woman
Sony Pictures Classics

Nominations: 1 - Best Foreign Language Film

A courageous and emotionally devastating film about a trans woman (Daniela Vega) struggling to cope with the sudden death of her partner - namely his family's reaction to her bring trans - A Fantastic Woman offers an intimate glimpse into a life rarely seen on-screen.

Extremely compassionate in its depiction of the trans community, the film is nevertheless on its own terms a magnificent character-driven affair, with Vega's performance serving as one of many that probably should've pipped Meryl Streep to the Best Actress post.

As a celebration of life above all else, A Fantastic Woman does find hope even in its more unpleasant moments, and should be considered a frontrunner to win the gong outright.
