Every 2018 Oscar Nominee Ranked From Worst To Best

42. Kong: Skull Island

Kong Skull Island Kong
Warner Bros.

Nominations: 1 - Best Visual Effects

Quite how a film with CGI as hideous as Kong: Skull Island made the cut is anyone's guess, but the film itself is...fine? It's an incredibly basic, lazy tentpole blockbuster with a few fun action beats and a marvellous John C. Reilly performance, and that's basically it.

The likes of Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson are given cardboard cutout characters to work with, a lot of the set-pieces are merely acceptable, and overall, it feels like indie filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts was a little in over his head here.

It does what it needs to do by setting up Godzilla vs. Kong, but beyond that, it's a bare bones attraction best watched while you've got some housework to do.
