Every 2018 Oscar Nominee Ranked From Worst To Best

2. War For The Planet Of The Apes

War For The Planet Of The Apes Caesar
Fox

Nominations: 1 - Best Visual Effects

Despite War for the Planet of the Apes being one of the year's most acclaimed movies - blockbuster or otherwise - the Academy apparently couldn't bring itself to vote for a movie about apes warring with humans, so the film has been unfairly relegated to a single nod for its visual effects.

History dictates that, as with the two previous Apes movies, War is probably going to lose the Best Visual Effects category, even though its mind-bogglingly impressive performance-capture tech smokes everything else in the field (yes, even Blade Runner 2049's staggering world-building).

War for the Planet of the Apes succeeds as both a thrilling blockbuster and a character-driven drama, with Andy Serkis' typically inscrutable performance bringing Caesar's journey to an end in suitably affecting fashion.

Matt Reeves' direction here cements him as one of the strongest tentpole filmmakers working today, and from its disappointing box office through to its lack of major Oscar love, it's a shame the film has been so broadly ignored.
