Every 2019 Comic Book Movie Ranked Worst To Best
6. Captain Marvel
Though it is something of a shame that Scarlett Johansson and Black Widow couldn't be the first, 2019 saw Marvel finally step into the 21st century, allowing Brie Larson to become the first female to lead an MCU movie.
Naturally, the hype for Captain Marvel was through the roof, particularly with it being the final chapter in the saga before Endgame. Unfortunately however, while Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's movie wasn't bad by any stretch, it did not live up to the expectations set before it.
Though it introduced a strong character with unlimited potential into the MCU, and gave us a genuinely surprising revelation regarding the Skrulls, Captain Marvel felt almost formulaic as an origin story, suffered from a forgettable villain and incredibly suspect CGI, and missed the mark on a lot of the trademark Marvel humour.
It is clear now that the biggest and best aspect Captain Marvel brought to the table was the off-screen reality of Marvel Studios finally releasing a female led movie. Of course, this is fantastic and way overdue, but it would have been nice if such an important film would have had a bit more to show on the screen as well.
