The comic book movie genre has come a long, long way over the last decade or so. From the days of obscurity to being one of the most lucrative genres there is, with no fewer than 16 titles released in 2019 alone. While Marvel released three MCU movies in one calendar year for the first time, the DCEU added to their franchise and opened the door to a potential whole new movie universe, and released six animated films.

Naturally, these are the names that spring to mind when discussing comic book movies, but Vertigo and Dark Horse also contributed to this incredible number, while Fox also released their penultimate X-Men movie (assuming New Mutants ever actually sees the light of day).

After 2018 gave us one of the most memorable comic book movie years in recent times, 2019 had a lot to live up to, and while there may have been more high profile let downs this year than last, we also saw Marvel's first foray into the world of female led movies, and two of the highest rated efforts the genre has ever offered.

Netflix

Directed by Jonas Akerlund, and starring Mads Mikkelsen, the movie adaptation of the Dark Horse comic series, Polar, hit Netflix in 2019 to mostly negative reviews. Mikkelsen's Duncan, an ageing hitman finds himself on the wrong side of a contract to avoid a hefty retirement payout.

The movie seems confused as to what it wants to be, as the quiet, noir moments with Duncan are completely at odds with Matt Lucas' horrendously eccentric, tough to watch villain, Blut, and the rest of the off the wall cast of characters.

Unsurprisingly, Mikkelsen is the best part of the movie, let down by just about everything else. The tone, the supporting cast, and the poor attempts at humour all failed to lift Polar higher than an embarrassing 20% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
