Every 2020 Movie That Could Make A Billion Dollars
8. Onward
Pixar is one of the most reliable studios around, able to deliver box-office hits and critical darlings with apparent ease. The Cars series and The Good Dinosaur are really the only iffy spots on their record, but even then, only the latter actually lost money.
So, at the very least, Onward should be a profitable hit, but it also has a shot at reaching one billion dollars by the end of its run, despite being an original IP.
Just look at Pixar's own Inside Out and Coco, which were both also original ideas. Each managed to gross an enormous $800 million worldwide, simply because they were terrific movies that were marketed strongly. Onward could also hit like this, and will be aided by the fact that it's the first AAA animated movie of 2020 - so families will be hungering for something just like it.
Assuming this is the case and Onward manages to pull Inside Out and Coco numbers, it has one crucial ingredient that could push it to a billion, something that those other two films lacked: star power.
Sure, Inside Out had Amy Poehler and Bill Hader, but neither are family movie stars, and they were nowhere to be found in the marketing. Coco, meanwhile, lacked name talent altogether. Conversely, Onward features the voices of Chris Pratt and Tom Holland, two universally-beloved actors whose superhero characters have almost made them household names.
There are people who will go to this movie just because they're in it, and if Disney pushes them hard, they could be the key that gives Onward that extra bit of boost.
