Every 2020 Movie That Could Make A Billion Dollars
3. Venom 2
Venom 2 is expected to open next October, and is now on the billion-dollar watchlist thanks to its predecessor's performance.
That first film also opened in October and managed to make a surprising $856 million, in large part thanks to a huge helping hand from China. In fact, it made more in China than it did in North America, making the flick a true international hit that played well in pretty much every major territory.
This means that Venom 2 doesn't have any markets left to "crack". It already has the two biggies - China and America - in its back pocket, a financial boon if there ever was one. And with a quiet October to stretch its gooey legs in, it has a lot of room to play around and find that extra $144 million the first film couldn't.
Now, granted, Venom wasn't great, and audiences might remember that the second time around. But let's be optimistic for a second. Andy Serkis is helming Venom 2 and he's a hell of a filmmaker, and should be able to add a bit more depth and weight on top of the first film's fluff and cheese. The sequel will also boast Carnage, a deadly villain who will allow Serkis to suitably up the ante.
Assuming Venom 2 is a better film than the original - and factoring in that trend about first superhero sequels, that we mentioned in the Wonder Woman entry - there's even a chance it could be the highest-grossing film of the year.
