Adam Sandler Punch Happy Gilmore
Columbia Pictures

Every character in this story of cultural taboos colliding with family values and societal expectations gets the chance to make a strong impression on us. But weirdly enough, it's perhaps Adam Sandler who shines brightest - just behind the underrated Paz Vega, anyhow - as the hapless husband who tangles himself in a tryst with his new Latina housekeeper.

There's not a lot to feel indifferent about in this James L. Brooks' dramedy, as the writer/director decides to hit us over the head with heavy-handed social commentary. It doesn't leave much room for the audience to draw its own conclusions.

Still, as far as the performances go, all involved are on their own game. But it really says something that Sandler is able to hold his own in a cast that includes Cloris Leachman and Tea Leoni.

Punch Level: A playful jab for taking so much screen time away from the unimitable Leachman.
