Every Alien Movie - Ranked From Worst To Best
5. Alien: Resurrection
As a film, Alien: Resurrection is an oddity. It bears the Alien franchise name and features its Xenomorphs, but it's full of black humour and takes an almost whimsical approach to its horror, which directly contrasts every other entry in the series.
The main issue the film has is its choice of tone. Quite possibly due to the involvement of writer Joss Whedon, this is the lightest, weirdest entry in the series to date.
In one scene, a man mimics the facial movements and bared teeth of a Xenomorph that's behind a glass cage in front of him, before kissing the glass. Which is very weird. There's also a scene with Ripley playing basketball, and she even manages to score a blind trick-shot! Doesn't that just scream "Alien"?
Even the horror and gore feels amusing - whether this is intentional or not is up for debate.
At one point, as General Martin Perez is saluting his fallen comrades, he's attacked from behind by a Xenomorph. Before he dies, he reaches back, pulls out a portion of his brain, and stares at it with big wide eyes.
It's all just a bit odd.
Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, like Whedon, is best known for his breezier material, so perhaps the two weren't the best duo for a movie in this universe, and the evidence is onscreen.
This is an enjoyable film, but it just doesn't feel like a proper entry in the Alien franchise.
