Every Avenger's Best Performance OUTSIDE The MCU
6. Jeremy Renner - The Hurt Locker
Everyone's least favourite Avenger hasn't had the best of times throughout the franchise. As one of the original six, Hawkeye had always been sidelined and joked about, despite the writers of the MCU attempting to make him as engaging as possible.
But that's not to say Jeremy Renner is not a compelling actor - far from it even. He's held his own in films such as The Town, Wind River, and even showed potential as taking over from Tom Cruise in the Mission Impossible franchise. Perhaps the best example of where Jeremy Renner's strengths lie, is in the 2008 Academy Award winning film The Hurt Locker; a film where Renner himself was nominated for Best Actor.
There's a nihilism that comes with bomb diffuser William James. And to play that role, Kathryn Bigelow needed someone who was stone-faced and relaxed at the same time. Renner's portrayal of the lead anti-hero is almost sociopathic as he cavalierly strolls into hostile territory, or engages with his team.
The lack of emotion to Renner's character isn't a sign of bad acting, but how reserved and cold William James has become. He's all calm and cool until he snaps, and it's frightening how accurate Renner is in the role.
