Batman's greatest weapon isn't his batarangs, his Batmobile, or his fists.

It's his resilience. Not only will Batman never back down, he will never fail to do the right thing, no matter how easy it is to compromise.

Although this is well-known to comic fans, it's never been exemplified better than in The Dark Knight. After Batman defeats the Joker, he believes the city is finally safe from his tyranny.

But after the Clown Prince of Crime admits he pushed Harvey Dent into becoming a murderer, Batman rushes to stop the D.A. as he's about to kill Commissioner Gordon's family. Just before Harvey pulls the trigger, Bats shoves his former friend off a ledge, killing him.

Because Harvey was regarded as the heart of Gotham, Batman knows it'll destroy the city to learn he's become a serial killer. To preserve Harvey's legacy, Batman urges Gordon to pin Harvey's murders on him. Even though he will be forced on the run, Batman doesn't hesitate to make this decision, believing it is in the city's best interests.

Although we all know Batman never sought glory or accolades for his work, this moment encapsulates his selflessness better than anything put to screen. The fact Batman allows his reputation to be tarnished, so his city doesn't lose hope is a sign that he truly is the hero they need but don't deserve.
