The reception for Tim Burton's Batman was astoundingly negative immediately after Michael Keaton was cast as the titular hero. Because Keaton was better-known for dabbling in comedies, comic fans couldn't envision him as a musclebound vigilante.

Thankfully, 1989's Batman was a triumph through-and-through. It captured the feel of the comics, the action was fast-paced, Danny Elfman's score is gorgeous, and Jack Nicholson's Joker steals the whole show. Even though we've had a zillion Batmans over the years, Michael Keaton's is still regarded as The GOAT by many.

Not only is Batman still considered one of the best superhero films, it also has among the most satisfying and uplifting endings. After an endlessly entertaining showdown with his arch-nemesis, Batman saves the city and is labelled a hero by the people. District Attorney Harvey Dent reads a note from Batman to the citizens, promising he will be there to help them. When a reporter asks how to contact him, Gordon reveals the Bat-Signal.

While Elfman's empowering score echos in the background, the film closes on a shot of Batman on a rooftop, gazing at the Bat-signal in the sky. With this simple image, we know Batman will always be there to safeguard Gotham.
