Every Batman Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

2. Batman Begins

It's easy to take Batman Begins for granted almost 20 years after its release, but there's no overstating the breath of fresh air that Nolan's gritty franchise reboot was back in 2005.

Paradoxically "back to basics" and yet infinitely more robust and complex than any Batman film before it, Nolan delivered a stridently "realistic" take on the Caped Crusader that eschewed heavily stylised art direction and VFX in favour of a more grounded, psychologically-powered Batman movie.

The result is basically the blueprint for a superhero origin story, which capably onboards newbies while delivering nourishment for long-time fans of the franchise.

Christian Bale is excellent as both Bruce and Batman, Michael Caine matches him as Alfred, the action sequences are magnificent, and Nolan strikes a tone that's just serious enough without forgetting to be humorous.

The only major ding against it is the sometimes choppy editing during action scenes, though Nolan thankfully never repeated this issue in either of his sequels.
