Every Batman Movie Ranked Worst To Best

12. Batman (1943)

Batman Movies
Warner Bros.

Though some might say that the first serials don't really count, but all-in, the actors played the character for longer than the majority of those who've pulled on the cowl. Consider Lewis Kelly for instance, who played the Dark Knight for more than 3 and a half hours, though he'd never trouble the top of any ranking of the character.

What the first serial did really well was introducing a golden age heartthrob Bruce Wayne, clipped and charismatic and absolutely of the same vaguely chauvinistic pride of heroes from those early days. There was no sign of him being uncomfortable in his skin, or the fractured personal story, but the smarm works nicely.

The action is still very much of the kind you'd expect in silent movies, and there's something of the model that Adam West clearly based his show on. And this was the first point where the power of fear to Batman's whole shtick was first introduced.
