Every Batman Movie Ranked Worst To Best

7. Batman Forever

Batman Movies
Warner Bros. Pictures

Batman Forever is far from the disaster its follow-up ended up being: it's some distance poorer than Tim Burton's movies, but it hadn't quite got into the outlandish cartoonish waters of Batman & Robin, and the agenda to sell toys hadn't entirely destroyed the story-telling conventions or focus on characters.

The claustrophobic darkness of Burton's Gotham was replaced with lots of day-glo paint, a more vulgar take on similarly grotesque characters and sillier writing for the sake of marketability. Jim Carrey's Riddler is far more sinned against than sinning, Val Kilmer's Batman is legitimately very good and the story-telling works.

Unfortunately, Tommy Lee Jones' Two Face is no more than a ripped-off Joker, the film removes Bruce Wayne's twisted angst and Burton's stunning Gotham is sanitised (and in the opening, fatally CGIed), and its biggest crime is making Batman & Robin possible as a sequel.
