Every Batman Ranked From Worst To Best

6. Dolphy €“ James Batman

1966 was a big year for humanity. Revolver, Pet Sounds and Blonde on Blonde came out, the Gemini 10 space mission pushed us further out into space than had ever been achieved before, and, in an intriguing spin on the Batman legend, Filipino comedian Dolphy decided to mash up the caped crusader with that other noted violent righter of violent wrongs, James Bond, for a cold war satire based on the jolly subject of nuclear terrorism.

The CLAW gang want to blow up the world for some reason, so James Bond and Batman (plus Robin) come along to sort everything out. Dolphy€™s Batman isn€™t actually that far from Adam West€™s interpretation, aside from a deep love for olives (he keeps a clutch of the little salty blighters in his utility belt just in case).

Parodying an already ludicrous, knowing, arch character like West€™s Batman seems a bit pointless to be honest, but Dolphy spins Batman as a kind of slobbish, crass, petulant idiot who fights crime as he apparently hasn€™t got much better to do €“ all qualities which are there within the character to begin with. Dolphy was blessed with eighteen children, and was posthumously awarded the Philippines€™ highest honour for achievements in the arts, so things panned out fairly well for him all things considered.
