Director David Ayer reportedly had his grittier original vision for the ensemble superhero pic put through Warner Bros' executive mangle, the end result a frantic, tonally uneven hodgepodge of moods and ideas that didn't much coalesce or entertain.

In strictly personal terms Affleck does just fine in his brief cameo, but the film as a whole is a dispiriting disaster - a monument to how a promising cast and crew can be squandered by a scissor-happy studio.

At least James Gunn's recent do-over basically course-corrected the enterprise.
