Every Best Picture Oscar Winner Ranked Worst To Best
85. A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Ron Howard’s dramatization of mathematician John Nash’s struggles with schizophrenia is one of the sloppiest Best Picture winners, alternating between quiet and inspirational to blunt and silly in a single scene.
Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly try to anchor Howard’s mess with career-best performances, but they’re not enough to overcome the film’s preposterous twists, lazy mental health portrayals, and directionless script (which somehow won an Oscar of its own). Howard’s been worse, but he’s also been much better.
