93. The Broadway Melody (1929)

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
MGM

The Broadway Melody is widely regarded as the first Hollywood musical, and it’s unfortunately one of the genre’s worst.

Sloppily executed, clichéd (even, one suspects, at the time), and narratively underwhelming, it slips and slides between overly melodramatic and painfully mundane. Needless to say the Academy have missed a lot of far more innovative musicals since, and its big screen glam has lost all its novelty since its premiere.
