There have been plenty of boring Best Picture winners over the years, but few can hold a candle to the ambitious musical biopic The Great Ziegfeld, an extravagant ensemble epic that aims high but comes up looking decidedly dull by journey’s end.
William Powell is strong enough as the titular theatre legend, but when any movie is this needlessly long (180 minutes!) and arduously paced, no performer or impressive set pieces can possibly save it.
