Oliver! is the kind of musical remembered more for its status as a classic than for what it actually achieves. Ron Moody is divine as Fagin, and Carol Reed, though still an odd choice on paper to direct a wholesome family musical, makes the most of his chance to bring Dickens’ tale to life.

Unfortunately, for all its iconic one-liners and tunes, Oliver! will always be remembered for beating 2001: A Space Odyssey for the Academy’s highest honour, a decision that has aged poorly to say the least. For shame.
