Every Best Picture Oscar Winner Ranked Worst To Best
63. Shakespeare In Love (1998)
It may be one of the Academy’s biggest surprise winners (beating Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line to the top prize), but Shakespeare in Love is much more fun than it gets credit for.
Self-aware and amusing, bursting with references to the Bard, the romance is playful and fun, ably brought to life by committed leads Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow. Even if it fails to live up to the nominees around it - and has an unsavoury connection to Harvey Weinstein - Shakespeare in Love deserves a second chance.
