52. Gladiator (2000)

Ridley Scott's sword-and-sandal epic Gladiator is a divisive film, either maligned for its admittedly simple story or acclaimed for its brutal action, fine performances, and gripping tale of a captive warrior avenging his family.
Story-wise, the drama goes through every motion you expect it to - none of its twists are that shocking - but Scott's assured direction and the work of stars Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix make it brilliantly engaging. It could've been forgettable, but its execution made it a classic.
