7. Lawrence Of Arabia (1962)
The greatest project in David Lean's phenomenal filmography, Lawrence of Arabia is arguably the great Holllywood epic; a war biopic that, at 220-minutes in length, never becomes a chore to get through, and expertly compliments its awe-inspiring imagery with a powerful, character-driven tale of combat and fate.
An enthralling portrait of T.E. Lawrence, a British soldier who finds his calling leading Arab forces against the Turks during the First World War, the drama is truly a sight to behold, crafted with such sumptuous production design the visual achievements of the movie feel as fresh now as they did in 1962.
It's something of a cliché to say they don't make films like this anymore, but with Lawrence of Arabia - like Gone with the Wind earlier in this list - it's totally true. This is a risk-taking epic without equal.
