Every Bond Movie Pre-Title Scene Ranked - Worst To Best

11. Thunderball (1965)

By the time of Sean Connery’s fourth film, the art of the pre-credits sequence had really verged towards stellar segments. Every one needed to improve on its predecessor, which in this case meant showing off bigger and better gadgets along with a classic fight scene.

“Madam, I’ve come to offer my sincere condolences,” says 007, before decking the ersatz widow of one Colonel Jacques Bouvar with a fist. The SPECTRE agent shouldn’t have opened that car door himself, after all. With Bouvar’s cover blown, the two engage in a brutally violent scrap. Tables, chairs, bookcases, pokers, anything goes in this no holds barred bout. Of course, we all know who’ll come out on top, and aren’t disappointed.

Bond’s classic coldly dark humour is on full display as he tosses a fresh bouquet over Bouvar’s corpse and uses a well-placed jetpack(!) to flee the scene, his getaway car waiting.

It’s somewhat marred by the silliness of Bond’s vehicle then shooting mild jets of water at the chasing foes - especially since they run directly into the feeble sprays, like the most vacuous of villains. Aside from that mild blemish, however, this is an iconic opening sequence.

Best moment: We can only imagine how many cinema-goers in 1965 almost spat out their drinks in shock when Sean Connery walloped a “woman” straight in the face.
