Every Bong Joon-Ho Film Ranked Worst To Best

3. Snowpiercer

The Host
CJ Entertainment

If the $10 million budget of The Host was not big enough, Bong would end up writing and directing with the most expensive Korean production ever with Snowpiercer at $40 million.

Based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, the film takes place onboard a train circumnavigating the globe as it carries the last remenants of humanity that has now become segregated by class. Curtis Everett (Chris Evans) leads a revolution of the lower-class sections against the elite at the front of the train. The film received massive critical acclaim and was considered one of the best films of 2014.

However controversy surrounded the films release due to its distribution rights being bought by The Weinstein Company. This was due to Harvey Weinstein himself wanting parts of the film edited, to which Bong refused. After much public pressure, the film switched distributors to Radius-TWC, but was only received in limited art house cinemas.

But thanks to the films positive reception, it eventually received wider US release across multiple theatres. To this day, Snowpiercer stands as an example of Bong’s incredible talent as a filmmaker and his commitment to keeping his artistic vision intact.
