Every Bong Joon-Ho Film Ranked Worst To Best
4. Mother
In between his time making both The Host and Snowpiercer, Bong continued to increase his reputation as a filmmaker with his 2009 drama, Mother.
Set in a small southern town of South Korea, Mother follows the story of a local widow living alone with her son, who has a learning disability. Their relationship is tested after the son is blamed for damaging a local mans car, causing the family to be sued, and left struggling to pay the debt.
But after the son is accused of murdering a local high school girl, the widow tries to prove his innocence. But after her lawyer proves to be unreliable and the community seem certain that her son is guilty, she has no choice but to go out on her own to try and find out what happened.
Like many of Bong’s films, Mother was met with major acclaim from both critics and cinema audiences. It demonstrates Bong’s amazing versatility as he was able to craft a film that focuses on a tense family drama while also infusing it with the right amount of humour and suspense.
