In the same discussion as the Wookie-inspired flick, Lucas also expressed an interest in a droid spinoff. It would have made R2-D2 and C-3PO the protagonists adventuring across the galaxy. On paper, the idea does spark some interest, with the duo’s relationship standing the test of time throughout the entire Skywalker saga.
Alas, like the untitled Wookiee film, Lucas never mentioned plans for a droid film again. However, R2 and 3PO did get their moment of stardom in the series Star Wars: Droids – The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO. The animated series ran for one season, set in between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope as they bounced between different masters facing off against bounty hunters, criminals, and the Empire.
That series will probably be the closest we’ll get to an R2/3PO buddy cop escapade, along with Star Wars Rebels' episode Droids in Distress which places them alongside the main protagonists.
