Disney recently revealed their new comic and book series set in the ‘High Republic’, focussing on events 200 years before the Skywalker saga. Sadly, it’s doubtful we’ll be seeing any live-action releases from this series anytime soon. However, there has been a recent attempt to explore Star Wars’ past on the big screen.

Disney hired Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to head a new trilogy of films, the first one slated for December 16 2022. As mentioned previously, fans have been begging for an Old Republic film adaptation ever since the 2003 RPG graced their computer screens. Yet, it seemed like the duo wanted to go further back than that, with Variety suggesting the pair wanted to focus on the first Jedi in the universe and their origin story.

However, the duo parted ways with Disney after signing a $250 million deal with Netflix. This move could have been a blessing in disguise, however, as Game of Thrones fans rejoiced at the news, citing displeasure with the show’s subpar final season.

With the Old Republic being so adored by fans, maybe it’s best if Disney waited to put it in safer hands, that is if a director is brave enough to revitalise that period of Star Wars history.
