11. The Party (2017)

Cillian Murphy Inception
BFI

In this slight but delightful comedy from Sally Potter, Murphy is joined by Patricia Clarkson, Timothy Spall and Kristin Scott Thomas for the dinner party from hell, in which romantic and political tensions boil to the surface.

Murphy stars as Tom, a smooth, cocaine-snorting banker betrayed by his wife and increasingly agitated by his surroundings. This may sound like a dark and gritty turn for the actor, but in fact it's perhaps the funniest of his career, snivelling, hilariously indecisive, and slapstick.

Potter's comedy is astute and sharply performed all round, but Murphy's the showstopper, swinging for the fences, causing a scene, and having a blast.
