Every Cillian Murphy Movie Ranked Worst To Best

27. How Harry Became A Tree (2001)

Cillian Murphy Inception
IFC Films

How Harry Became a Tree is an absurd, allegorical melodrama about an Irish man (Colm Meaney) who causes a scandal in town but tears his family apart in the process.

Murphy, impossibly young and a bit shaky, plays Meaney's lovesick and abused son, who's unwittingly roped into the feud his father has concocted. It's sort of Banshees of Inisherin-lite (it even has an early performance from Kerry Condon), only the metaphor and fantasy don't quite land with the witty humour.

Murphy, like the rest of the cast, is perfectly fine and amusing, but it's hard to focus when the film around him is trying so hard to shake you up with its farcical imagination.
