Every DCEU Movie Ranked From Worst To Best (So Far)
6. Suicide Squad
Though it benefited enormously from a strong marketing campaign which promised an irreverent palate cleanser following Batman v Superman's disappointing reception, Suicide Squad ironically ended up doubling down on most of that movie's flaws.
The franchise's pesky executive meddling struck again here, mangling David Ayer's gonzo vision into a committee-driven end result, marked by excessive use of pop music, a "streamlined" plot, and a wavering tone that couldn't quite decide what it wanted to be.
Now, there's little reason to believe that Ayer's version of the movie would've been great, because Cara Delevinge's Enchantress is a trash-fire antagonist any way you cut it. However, had the studio just let him make the movie he wanted to, the intended grunginess probably would've shone through much stronger.
To Suicide Squad's mild credit, it is the only movie from either the DCEU or the MCU to have won an Oscar (for Best Makeup and Hairstyling), so that's neat. But to call this a missed opportunity is an insult to missed opportunities.
Fingers crossed that James Gunn's in-the-works sequel can deliver on the original's promise, because the cast sure seemed game enough the first time around.
