Every Denis Villeneuve Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
6. Incendies (2010)
In many ways the film that made Villeneuve's career and catapulted him to Hollywood, Incendies was nominated for the 2011 Best Foreign Film Oscar, and follows a pair of Canadian twins (Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin and Maxim Gaudette) as they investigate the mysterious past of their recently-deceased mother Nawal (Lubna Azabal).
Though the narrative is intentionally over-dramatic, Villeneuve does a fantastic job stylishly weaving together the non-linear structure, aided by eye-popping cinematography and pin-sharp editing.
The real standout here, though, is Lubna Azabal, whose fantastic performance as the young Nawal drives the film towards its jaw-droppingly shocking resolution.
While the third act is undeniably undermined by the implausibility of a few revelations, it can't entirely dent the impact of what's effectively a contemporary Greek tragedy.
