But that's not quite the case with his portrayal of alcoholic pilot Whip Whitaker in Flight, who saves a packed plane from disaster and must fight his addiction whilst saving his career.

Tragic but also verging on unlikable, Washington sinks deep into the role of a broken man unable to fully combat his vices, and the gripping thriller around him only helps to cement Whip as one of the actor's most layered and complex characters.
