Every Fox Movie That Has Bombed Under Disney (And How Much They Lost)

2. Underwater ($50 Million Loss)

Production Budget: $65 million | Worldwide Gross: $39 million

Another movie at the tail-end of its theatrical run, Underwater was unfortunate enough to be dumped in January with absolutely no buzz surrounding it.

And sure enough, that affected its box-office results, with its $7 million opening weekend hardly setting the movie world on fire. Even worse, it sank like a rock after that disappointing debut, and is currently sat at just $39 million worldwide against a $65 million budget.

Interestingly, the fate of Underwater is almost exactly the same thing that happened to The Kid Who Would Be King last year, even right down to the financial details.

Both were produced by Fox, both came out in January with next to no buzz, both had similar production budgets ($65 million/$59 million), and both absolutely tanked at the box-office: The Kid Who Would Be King made just $28 million in total, and according to insiders for Variety, it lost somewhere close to $50 million for its studio.

While the two movies likely had different marketing spends (The Kid Who Would Be King, being a family movie, had to reach a wider audience, and so probably cost more to advertise), the numbers are similar enough that Underwater could've also ended up being a $50 million loss.

Hell, even if it's $10 million less than that, there's still not much to be happy about if you're Disney or Fox.
