Every Francis Ford Coppola Movie Ranked Worst To Best
10. Rumble Fish (1983)
Whilst filming The Outsiders, Coppola found himself drawn to another Hinton novel called Rumble Fish. The pair teamed up to write it whilst the latter film was still in production, borrowing the same cast (Matt Dillon, Diane Lane) and crew as the visceral gangland drama.
Rumble Fish focusses on feared former gang leader Motorcycle Boy (Mickey Rourke) and his daredevil brother Rusty (Dillon), whose aspirations to live up to his brother's reputation cause the pair to go a shared journey characterised by self-evaluation and a series of shock revelations.
Filmed in striking black-and-white, the drama is known for its experimental production, which saw Coppola using French New Wave filming techniques and a challenging soundtrack courtesy of The Police's drummer Stewart Copeland. The finished product is an offbeat, original drama bursting with alternately dark and moving sequences, and a pair of riveting central performances.
