Every Francis Ford Coppola Movie Ranked Worst To Best
11. The Outsiders (1983)
The 80s wasn't Coppola's best decade, simply because he never reached the excellent standard of his 70s winning streak and often found his films flopping hard at the box office. But looking back, many of his films from the decade were pretty good, including the iconic coming-of-age drama The Outsiders.
Based on the novel by S. E. Hinton, the first thing you notice about The Outsiders is its cast, which is made up of too many future superstars to count. Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon and Ralph Macchio all got in on the action, in a film that charts the rise and fall of small-time gang The Greasers, as they attempt to make peace with their violent lives.
The film is a searing portrayal of adolescent rage and turmoil, in which the young actors all shine as alternately broken, tough and vulnerable teens lost to a life they can't escape. It may seem a little dated now, but the emotion of the story is as hard-hitting and affecting as ever.
