Every Francis Ford Coppola Movie Ranked Worst To Best

15. The Cotton Club (1984)

The Godfather 2 Robert De Niro
Orion Pictures

A recurring issue with Coppola's run in the 80s is how focussed he is on creating a beautiful atmosphere over a compelling story. At times, The Cotton Club is the perfect example of this, switching between glorious set pieces and musical numbers, and then to Richard Gere's awkward and flat protagonist in a matter of seconds.

The Cotton Club, simply put, is a film about a musician (Gere) who finds himself caught between a gang war and racial strife. The film also stars Nic Cage, Diane Lane and Bob Hoskins, each of whom play larger-than-life personalities who often clash with the film's overall tone and themes.

But, as a whole, it can be forgiven for its character fumbles and narrative heavy-handedness, because Coppola shoots the story so gorgeously that it's hard to stay focussed on the low points. Sure, it would've benefitted from a more appropriate emotional core, but as a viewing experience The Cotton Club is a delight.
