Every Guillermo Del Toro Movie Ranked Worst To Best

11. Pacific Rim (2013)

Pans Labyrinth
Universal

It's bordering on impossible to dislike Pacific Rim, because in true del Toro fashion it's so unapologetically self-aware and him. It's a silly, over-the-top, violent assault to the senses, as well as a wondrous, almost child-like ode to the joys of seeing large robots in action.

Set in the distant future, concerned with humanity's war with enormous, unstoppable sea creatures known as the Kaiju, the dumb-fun actioner often feels like another mindless studio picture, a film aiming for a franchise and little depth, but del Toro's keen visuals and anime homages always break through to save it from forgettability.

Though it admittedly falls apart if you focus too deeply on its thin characters and incomplete worldbuilding, Pacific Rim still just kinda works. Had anyone else directed it, it probably would have been buried and forgotten by now. Thanks to del Toro, it'll remain a cult gem for years to come.
