Every James Bond Girl Ranked From Worst To Best

6. Anya Amasova - The Spy Who Loved Me

James Bond Girls Ranked
MGM

Anya Amasova (Barbara Bach), a Russian agent code-named Triple X (geddit?), is absolutely terrific.

Anya was written to be a female equal to Bond (an attempt on the franchise's part to update its treatment of its female characters) and this was done remarkably well. Anya's not just a gender-flipped copy of Bond; where he's a ferocious killer, she's more of a cunning and intellectual force and this gives the pair of them a very good dynamic together.

Anya works against Bond in the film's first half, then with him in the second half, and she remains great throughout. In the first half their banter and attempts to one-up each other are delightful to watch and once they join forces, they have absolutely fantastic chemistry.

It's a shame Anya does less as the film progresses and there's also an ill-judged subplot involving her wanting revenge on Bond for killing her lover (who was, in fairness to Bond, trying to kill him), which adds an irritating obstacle to what is otherwise a very endearing relationship.

Other than that though, she's a fantastic character and it's a shame she couldn't have returned.
