Every James Bond Movie Pre-Credits Scene Ranked Worst To Best

22. Diamonds Are Forever - Bond Kills Blofeld... Or Does He?

James Bond Goldeneye Opening
United Artists

This is another bottom-tier pre-credits scene for the franchise, which is fitting since it comes from such a train-wreck of a film.

The first part of this opening, which sees Bond (Sean Connery) beating up various people and demanding to know Blofeld's location, is just fine. But once he finds the real Blofeld (Charles Gray), who's having a man turned into a look-a-like via a plastic surgery operation, things get really, really stupid.

There's a groan-worthy fight scene in the medical room which ends with Bond throwing Blofeld into a hot mud bath and apparently killing him, although it was probably completely obvious even to audiences at the time that this was a fake-out death.

This is a largely terrible opening sequence that accurately foreshadows the issues with the film itself.

Like Diamonds are Forever, this scene has good locations and some mildly entertaining snippets but it's dragged down by an overly goofy and silly tone, deeply lacklustre action, Sean Connery's bored performance, a terrible incarnation of Blofeld and the way in which Bond's murdered wife from the previous film is literally never mentioned once.
