Every James Wan Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
6. Aquaman
After Wan's Fast and Furious 7 proved he could handle a mega-budget project, it was just a matter of time before he got scooped up to helm a superhero movie.
The fact that Warner Bros. spent $200 million on an Aquaman film will never not seem completely reckless, and yet, to their credit it ended up grossing over $1 billion worldwide.
A squarely mid-tier entry into the troubled DC Extended Universe, Aquaman is a pretty garden variety superhero origin story all things considered, if elevated by both Jason Momoa's grungy leading man performance and Wan's energetic direction.
It's fair to say that Aquaman is a film that looks both cheap and expensive at the same time - like if the folks behind the Power Rangers TV series were given an unlimited budget.
Between its bright visuals and goofy tone, though, Aquaman was a major breath of fresh air for many worn down by the DCEU's relentless grimness, even if it spreads itself far too thinly with too many characters amid a wildly overbaked 143-minute runtime.
If nothing else, it proved that Wan's prior blockbuster success was no mere fluke, and he could be relied upon to steer a colossal movie production.
