7. Jared Leto (Suicide Squad)

Did Jared Leto ever really stand a chance here?

As if following up Heath Ledger's legendary portrayal wasn't tough enough, his ultra-edgy, heavily tattooed iteration of The Joker was wildly lambasted by fans long before release, despite Leto promising a deeply intimidating presence in early teaser trailers.

Ultimately, much of Leto's role was cleaved to the cutting room floor in post-production, resulting in a Joker who basically shows up for an extended fan service cameo and little else.

Leto's off-the-wall shtick came off more irritatingly obnoxious than entrancingly terrifying as he intended, yet perhaps a more fleshed-out appearance could've fully sold the radical approach.

It was definitely smart to veer wildly away from Ledger's portrayal, but given the tidal wave of hype, Leto's Joker barely felt like much of a fixture at all.
