Every Jurassic Park Movie Ranked Worst To Best

4. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

After the massive success of Jurassic Park four years earlier, Steven Spielberg and a reluctant Michael Crichton teamed-up for an inevitable sequel, The Lost World, which follows Jeff Goldblum's Ian Malcolm as he tries to save an island of dinosaurs.

Though by no means an atrocious film, the first Jurassic Park sequel is still about as awkward as its backward title, sacrificing the awe and wonder of its predecessor for stricter focus on mindless action (at one point, a raptor is defeated by the gymnastic ability of Malcolm's young daughter) and cheap thrills.

That's not the case for the entire film, though, since it features one of the franchise's greatest moments when its characters are trapped teetering over a cliff in a trailer. But its worst intuitions - including its rushed, out of place finale - let it down despite this memorable high.

The Lost World, like The Temple of Doom years earlier, proves Spielberg is not the man for the job when it comes to great sequels. It's not bad by a long stretch, but it's hard to watch it without thinking he's just going through the motions, knowing he can't match what came before.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
