Every Kevin Smith Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
4. Clerks II (2006)
The fact that Clerks II exists at all is the perfect progression from the first movie. That ended on a hopeful note (at least after the original downer ending was excised), with Randall berating Dante for revelling in his own misery and stifling his own progression for the opportunity to whinge about it. You get the sense that there might be something better for him afterwards.
But then bam, smash-cut to 12 years later and they're in arguably an even worse job drowning in the same corporate nihilism, talking the same trash and serving the same people while the same stoners sell the same drugs outside. It's the ultimate f*ck you to progression and the ultimate expression of the first film's gleeful stance against ambition.
It absolutely didn't deserve an 8 minute standing ovation at Cannes (but what does?), but it recaptured the spirit of the original while aiming body blows at snarky Internet and fan culture and packing in some genuine laughs. It was a pleasure to return.
