Every Leonardo DiCaprio Movie Ranked Worst To Best

17. Django Unchained (2012)

Leonardo DiCaprio Shutter Island
Miramax Films

Your patience for Django Unchained entirely depends on your patience for Quentin Tarantino, who in this film somehow manages to give DiCaprio a role he doesn't feel entirely comfortable in, despite the compelling menace he's aiming for.

As the vile plantation owner Calvin Candie, DiCaprio manages to blend danger and intense unpredictability with a sinister charm, but eventually falters under the weight of Tarantino's dialogue, which pushes his performance to become a touch too showy for its own good.

Some might see that as the appeal, of course, especially when you hear stories about him cutting his hand open mid-scene only to keep acting. Ultimately, much like Django Unchained itself, DiCaprio is very good, just slightly bogged-down.
