Every Leonardo DiCaprio Movie Ranked Worst To Best
24. Total Eclipse (1995)
Had he been cast to star as young poet Arthur Rimbaud in Agnieszka Holland's sullen romantic drama later in his career - instead of a mere five movies in - there's a strong chance DiCaprio would have found more depth in the material.
With a script that seesaws dramatically between profundity and tacky melodrama, Total Eclipse follows Rimbaud as he falls in love with David Thewlis's older writer Paul Verlaine, and due to its glaring tonal inconsistencies refuses to give either man chance to dig into the film's troubling romance.
DiCaprio brings a confidence to Rimbaud that helps capture the poet's eccentricities and immaturity, but - much like Thewlis - not enough to explore the depth of his tragic downfall. The signs are there, pointing to bigger things, but they'd have to wait.
