Every Leonardo DiCaprio Movie Ranked Worst To Best

23. J. Edgar (2011)

Leonardo DiCaprio Shutter Island
Warner Bros.

In another life, DiCaprio teaming up with Clint Eastwood to make an epic biopic drama about J. Edgar Hoover would have birthed a sure-fire masterpiece, which is exactly why the film we got was such a remarkable disappointment.

Whilst Clint Eastwood has his merits as a filmmaker (think Million Dollar Baby and Unforgiven), his often stiff direction in J. Edgar leaves DiCaprio with little room to move around. The cheap prosthetics, grainy aesthetic, and boring, by-the-numbers narrative all suffocate the internal, conflicted performance he's aiming for.

For an actor who thrives when challenged by adventurous directors, the big issue with J. Edgar is that its star and director don't gel. DiCaprio tries to add some depth to proceedings, but the film has no interest in helping him.
