Every M. Night Shyamalan Movie Ranked Worst To Best

2. The Sixth Sense (1999)

Signs Mel Gibson
Buena Vista

The film that changed everything for M. Night Shyamalan and modern pop culture as a whole, featuring a twist no one was ready for, The Sixth Sense is easy to see only as a spooky ghost story with an iconic line. Watching it all these years, it's actually so much more than its most famous parts.

Following a sombre psychologist (a subtly devastating Bruce Willis) as he forms a bond with his young patient (Haley Joel "I see dead people" Osment), Shyamalan's grieving masterstroke is twisty, yes, but also horribly sad, as Willis comes to learn some awful truths and struggles to reconcile his failings.

Shyamalan scored two Oscar nods for The Sixth Sense, and it's easy to see why. It's not just an iconic twister, it's also a heartbreaking portrayal of loss and human connection that sinks into your soul and refuses to let you go. Still, I'd wager it's not quite the director's best...
